In the 1960’s a new era was gradually taking shape at Swindon Town Football Club. After a dismal period in the 1950’s with the club even having to seek re-election, manager Bert Head made a conscious decision to look for young talent and give them their change at a tender age.

Among that crop of players, who took Swindon Town into Division Two for the first time, was a winger called Mike Summerbee, who actually made his debut in 1959 after being spotted playing from Cheltenham.

Mike Summerbee: The Autobiography

Summerbee went on to play more than 200 games for Swindon Town Football Club before being sold to Manchester City after being relegated and he went on to earn 8 caps for England. There is plenty about those early days at Swindon in Mike Summerbee – The Autobiography, as well as talking about son Nicky, who’s career followed the same route as his father. You can also read about how he enjoyed life as footballer in the swinging 60’s.
